Sustainability is a word we are hearing over and over in the wedding business.
What does a sustainable eco friendly wedding look like?
First you have to realize that up until this point, weddings and events have one of the biggest footprints and the most amount of waste per event.
From catering to florals to decor there are a lot of disposables and single serving plastics used and most of the time after the event everything is thrown away.
I have personally seen thousands of dollars spent on florals and when its over we throw it all away because, well what do you do with it all? And food, once the food has sat for hours it has to be thrown away by law.
This is where an eco-friendly and sustainable wedding can help to start changing the way we do things in the wedding world.
Here are some ideas for a sustainable wedding.
- Use reusable dishes, table settings and glassware
- Minimal florals, use more plants
- Source local for food and florals as much as possible
- Find vendors that are local to you so they don’t travel as far
- Hire caterers that are eco consciousÂ
- Don’t overbuy for food options, guests won’t eat it all and there is always so much food left over
- For decor, try to find a venue that provides it or buy repurposed vintage decor and resell it
- Rent or buy a repurposed dress and suit
- Give back by planting trees, giving of your time in areas of need or donating to a green cause.
These are just a few ideas but if we all do our part I feel we can make an impact and make all our weddings more sustainable and eco friendly.
Cheers, Lisa
