The New Elopement

An elopement has meant many things throughout the centuries. The earliest elopement on record was in 1338 and the term meant that a wife was running away from her husband with a lover. 

Quite the opposite of today’s elopement.

The Marriage Act of 1735 started to change the meaning of an elopement as we know it today and it continued to morph and change all the way up to the present day. 

The new elopement trend started well before Covid. The creativity, freedom, friendly budget and ability to focus on each other makes an elopement the perfect choice for many couples.

Elopements can still have the fundamentals of a wedding like; a first look, a personalized ceremony, family present, florals, food, toasts, first dance and cake. It is all about the vision that the bride and groom have for their day.

I am an officiant and I own a venue that focuses on elopements and micro weddings, the couples I marry and work with are so excited about their day being only about them. 

They can get married when they want and where they want. I feel there is something so sweet, romantic and real about that.

A wedding is a celebration of love, and the ceremony/reception should reflect the personalities and vision of each couple. There are many options for weddings, the bride and groom just have to choose what is best for them.
